101-741 Scout Frame Kit | |
Here's one way of doing it. Pretty cool, huh? But this was as far as it got before the engine was used for another bike and so on... |
I
probably won't get around to finishing this pretty unique project, so the
frame and engine plates are looking for a new home.
The basic idea was
to build a "101 lookalike" based on the relatively cheap and plentiful
741 engine and trans. The frame is of TIG welded construction, except for
the cast steering head and rear axle mounts (new reproduction 101 castings).
Engine plates are Duralumin, and take a stock 741 engine/trans (see note
below on alternative gearboxes). Any number of front ends and wheels can
be fitted to the frame. Right now it has adapters for HD 1" steering head
bearings (Timken taper roller), but regular Scout bearings can also be
fitted. Rear wheel can be 101, 741, Sport Scout - or any number of other
wheels can be adapted. The frame is made for a stock 101 tank. I can supply
new tanks, either for the stock 101 oiling system (total loss and hand
pump), or for recirculating oiling as on the 741. Email for more info:

Here's another! More traditional looking, but in some ways more radical technically. |
This
is a "sister bike" with the same frame (except for one bracing tube which
can easily be added to the other frame), but with a Triumph 4-speed gearbox.
The engine plates
need to be modified a little bit for this, but the Brit gearbox is surprisingly
easy to fit to the engine plates (and to stock 741s - I did a small story
about that here).
It also has a belt drive, Japanese wheels, stock 101 forks and tank.

Rolling chassis. Note twin front frame tubes (like a 101), and how the aluminum engine plates bridge the bottom of the open frame (like a real racer!). The plates would look dead cool with swirly engine turning. See also note about frame tube when you click the photo. |
The
bike in the first pic (and here to the left) has Bultaco forks in Ceriani
trees with a custom 1" stem. Front wheel is Honda and rear is Suzuki. The
rear wheel has adapters for the stock bearings to take a Scout axle + spacers
to line it up with the frame. The front wheel is more or less the same.
All of this is fairly easy to do if you have lathe, or know someone who
can help.
Front end, wheels,
tank, saddle and fender are for illustration only. Only the frame with
Timken bearing adapters and engine plates are for sale (ok, I may also
be persuaded to part with the cool tapered and shaped stainless jockey
shifter made specially for this bike!).
