New frames, forks and other parts for 1920s Chief and Scout

Two guys in a garage after work and on weekends. That's what you are looking at here, so don't expect instant gratification. On the other hand, with a little patience a lot of cool things becomes possible.

Frames and forks are made with traditional castings. The castings are made with the lost wax process (look it up if interested; it's pretty neat) which is perfect for small batch production, and gives a nicer surface finish than sand castings.

Basically, wax patterns are cast in machined molds, ceramic is applied to the wax and fired in an oven which also melts out the wax. Molten steel is then poured into the ceramic shells. Shells are broken up after cooling and the semi-finished casting comes out.

Castings are then machined. Tubes are cut and bent and brazed into the castings. The other cast parts here are made in the same way.

The example here is the casting behind the tank on 1922-25 Chief frames.

Three-piece mold with cores for forming the tube holes. Molten wax is injected into the closed mold, flowing around the cores. The cores can then be pulled out when the wax has cooled and hardened.

OK, here's the deal with these parts... This is not really a part of IPE, but two guys in a garage after work can not both make frames and forks and deal with customers at the same time. That's where I come in.

At least half the people who contact me about parts like these only want to talk about the parts, and hear what they cost so they can plan their fantasy project. That is kind of OK with me (I'm used to it with my IPE hat on), but it is hard for two part-time guys in a garage to deal with on top of the parts-making.

Then about half the people who are seriously considering buying parts like these (and have the money for it) end up dropping out for one reason or another.

My job here is to help the two guys in the garage get down to the 25% of people who are actually going to order something.

So... You write me about something on this page. I am my usual friendly and helpful self, and give you a ballpark price and estimated production time, answer your questions, and help you figure out options for your Indian project.

But at the same time, I must judge if you are one of the dreamers or if I can pass you on to the guys in the garage without wasting their time. So be prepared to get real about this.

This approach may seem a little unusual, but all involved here are actually quite friendly and truly interested in helping you put another old Indian back on the road. But there are only resources in the garage for the hands-on parts making, so I must be the gatekeeper.

Practical details: You will arrange payment with the garage, and parts are sent directly from there to you. The guys are used to packing and shipping frames and forks all over the world. With common parts, payment is usually due when the parts are ready to send. For oddball stuff there may be a deposit involved.

Full disclosure: I get a contribution to the keep-IPE-going fund for my work.

Now, back to the parts...

Starting with the ever-popular 1928-30 101, if you want to end up with this, a frame and main fork is a good start!

While the focus here is on 1920s Chief parts, more or less all the rest of the 101 chassis parts are also available from the garage - ask - but you will have to put it together yourself and deal with the paint, nickel plating and general finishing fun.

The red 101 rolling chassis above was built with these parts.

This (left and above) is the 1928-30 101 frame. The 1931 101 frame has a different right side rear axle casting and is not currently available.

Original engine, the rest is new.

This 1926 Chief is being built from all-new parts. More parts pix will be listed below when I find time for it.

See list below; basically all 1920s Chief and Scout forks - and frames - are available, as well as some later fork main frames.

Some of the names for parts used here may be a little confusing, but blame the factory!

There is a certain logic to the names of the parts in the factory parts books, but this logic results in some pretty long names sometimes.

Like "Spring Fork Main Leaf Stud Oil Hole Screw Washer" and such.

On this page I think the most confusing is when both frames and forks are discussed together.

As can be seen in the 1922-28 Chief parts book pic on the left, the factory called the main part of the fork a "fork frame" and a "Spring fork main frame".

To make a distinction between the complete fork with leaf spring and all the small parts, and just the main part of the fork, on this page the meaning of the words are:

Fork = complete leaf spring fork.

Main fork or fork main frame or FMF = the main part of the fork.

I have more pix of most of them.

If you want something not in the list, a sample (for measuring and making a drawing of, not cutting it up or anything) is needed.

The main difference from 1939 is the extended bottom tube ->

There was a new wider center casting for the skirted-fender civilan 1940 fork. Skirted fenders don't fit in the CAV fork.

Leaf spring connecting links for 1932-39 Chief, Four and Standard Scout now available to order. Original part number 74114.

And 27B52 pins used from 1927-45 on all models, showing that many small parts are also available.

1920s Scout frames hold few secrets by now - examples of newly made ones above - but 1920s Chief frame details are generally less well known.

Maybe we can get back to the 1922-23 Chief frames, but here is a little 1924-29 detail info.

At some point in 1924 the frames got a new steering head casting (24-D-12) with supporting ribs either side of the main rib ->

1922, 1923 and probably early 1924 had the single-rib 22-D-1 casting. No pic of that now.

1922-23 had a casting for the seat pivot bracket, but late 1924-on used this folded plate version. All other castings were the same 1922-25.

Tank mounting brackets were steel plate for 4 tank bolts (8 in 1922-23 and again, with cast brackets, in 1930).

1924-25 Chief frame. Note seat suspension setup (used from 1922-25) and brake pedal pivot casting under frame tube.
-
1926 casting, no hole on top.

1926 frame center casting.
For 1926, there were a few major changes from 1925. The brake pedal pivot casting was moved from below the frame tube to above it, and the footboards were raised (new footboard pivot castings on frame) ->

There was a new center casting at the bottom of the saddle tube, with larger reinforcement ribs.

The casting under the seat lost the hole for the seat suspension, and the rear axle castings were changed to accommodate a new rear wheel center axle in 1926.

The 1926 (above) and 1927 brake pedal castings (right) seems to be the only difference between 1926 and 1927 frames.

The only difference between 1927 and 1928 Chief frames seems to be new 5/16" chain tensioner screws. No changes from 1928 to 1929, but lots of them for 1930.

20C31 fork connecting link, Scout 1920-23, note that these have not been machined yet. Most cast parts are available finish machined or unmachined, like these.

22C35 Chief 1922-23 fork connecting links with rockers, studs and pins, as an example of fork parts available to order.

22B154X bellcranks, Chief 1922-23.
Bellcranks for various years of Scout also available, pictures to follow.

24B86X bellcranks, Chief 1924-29. Note how the factory number is different from the cast-in numbers. This is often, but not always the case; sometimes the basic casting can be machined for different purposes, but they still needed a cast-in number to keep check on stocked parts at the factory. X after Indian factory numbers usually means an assembly of the basic part + minor parts like bushings.

24B86X bellcranks, Chief 1924-29. Other side. The bellcranks got their final basic form with these, but there were still detail changes. On Scouts, the 1928-31 101s used the 27B50X and 27B51X (left and right), and I think these were used on other models in the early 1930s too (will check when I can). The final version, not currently available, was used on Chiefs and Fours from 1937-45.

The pins that hold the connecting links to the bellcranks (the knurled rim bites into the edge of the hole in the links) all pretty much look the same. This is the 27B52 for 1927-45 Chief and Scout 1927-onwards. No big version of this picture and the next two.

The studs holding the bellcrank to the fork main frame also all look alike but are not the same. This is the 25B307 used on Chief, Four etc from 1924-36, and Scout from late 1925 onwards.

1922-23 Chief and Scout 1920-23 used the 20B159, Scout 1924-25 used 20B425, and later models from 1937-45 the 40956. Are we having fun yet? :-)

Handlebar center castings. Scout and Chief used the same castings around the same time. Scout 1920-27 and Chief 1922-27 without front brake used the early casting. Scout from 1928-30 and Chief from 1927-29 with front brake used the late casting.

They are widely interchangeable (I think all handlebar castings fit all Indian leaf spring forks from 1920-on). This can help you make your indian yours. The late casting is good for a little higher handlebars. The early one would be cool for a bobber with little stubs soldered in and dogbone risers!
